As an animal doctor and someone who has spent three decades on biomedical research, I know that animal res earch saves lives. I am concerned about deceptive claims from animal rights activists about the need for animal research. As we know, animal studies continue to be necessary for advancing human and animal health and have played avital role in every major medical advance. This includes lifesaving drugs vaccines ( 疫苗 ),new surgical procedures, and improved diagnosis of disease. Animal activists try to deceive people and count on socie ety's general lack of scientific insight to advance their a genda . These activists misrepresent the ability of comp uters and emerging scientific techniques to serve as su # # bst it ute s for animal studies. Government regulations an ound the world require that new drugs, vaccines, and surigical implants first be tested in animals for potential re actions to poisonous substances. 1. Why is the author concerned about claims from animal rights activists ?A The claims will arrest the development of animal research.B The claims will make the public believe something untrue.C Medical advancement will slow down. D Animal rights activists will play an important.

Do you chat with your dog and tell your cat secrets? Some of you doubt that it might be meaningless, while others hope that your pet understands. But what, and how much,do animals understand? For example, you know that animals are capable of experiencing pleasure, but do they experience humor?Do dogs or cats or any animal laugh in the same way that we laugh? The reasons why human beings develop laughter are mysterious.Every human on the planet, despite the language they speak, does it.It's something we develop before we can speak. So,while we don't know why we do it,we do know we do it.But do animals laugh? Monkeys vocalize enjoyment during chasing games or when they are being tickled(挠痒).Interestingly the apes that are more closely related to us,display delighted sounds most similar to human laughter. The fact suggests that laughter exists before any sort of speech. It's reported that Koko, the famous gorilla(黑猩猩) that used sign language, once tied her keeper's shoelaces together and then signed "chase me"showing her ability to make jokes. But what about birds? Some clever birds have been seen to copy laughter and even make fun of other animals. It's reported that one bird whistled and confused the family dog for joy.Crows(乌鸦) can use tools to locate food and pull the tails of predators(捕食性动物) to trick them while stealing food. But when there's no food,it suggests the bird does it just for fun.So it's possible that some birds have a sense of humor, and may even laugh, but we haven't been able to identify it yet. So how about the pets in our homes? Are they capable of laughing at us?There is evidence suggesting that dogs have developed a kind of laugh when they are enjoying themselves.Cats,on the other hand, were thought to show no emotions at all.You can be comforted that your cat isn't laughing at you.(1)What can we learn about laughter? ____ A.nimals are unable to laugh.B.It's developed before we can speak.C.Why people develop laughter is clear.D.Animals can understand why people laugh.(2)What does the underlined word"vocalize"mean in Paragraph 3? ____ A.let out.B.put out.C.figure out.D.spread out.(3)What will crows do when stealing food? ____ A.Laugh to please the predators.B.Whistle to confuse the predators.C.Pull the tails to cheat the predators.D.Use tools to threaten the predators.(4)What can be inferred from the text? ____ A.Gorillas can use signs to make jokes.B.Crows can steal food to treat the predators.C.Dogs can copy laughter to make fun of cats.D.Monkeys can chase other animals to tickle them.

The psychology of innovationWhy are so few companies truly innovation? Innovation is key to business survival, and companies put substantial resources into inspiring employees to develop new ideas. There are, nevertheless, people working in luxurious, state-of-the-art centres designed to stimulate innovation who find that their environment doesn't make them feel at all creative. And there are those who don't have a budget, or much space, but who innovate successfully. For Robert B. Cialdini, Professor of Psychology at Arizona State University, one reason that companies don't succeed as often as they should is that innovation starts with recruitment. Research shows that the fit between an employee's values and a company's values makes a difference to what contribution they make and whether, two years after they join, they're still at the company. One of the most famous photographs in the story of rock'n' roll emphasizes Ciaidini's views. The 1956 picture of singers Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis jamming at a piano in Sun Studios in Memphis tells a hidden story. Sun's 'million-dollar quartet' could have been a quintet. Missing from the picture is Roy Orbison, a greater natural singer than Lewis, Perkins or Cash. Sam Phillips, who owned Sun, wanted to revolutionize popular music with songs that fused black and white music, and country and blues. Presley, Cash, Perkins and Lewis instinctively understood Phillips' ambition and believed in it. Orbison wasn't inspired by the goal, and only ever achieved one hit with the Sun label.Managing innovation is a delicate art. It's easy for a company to be pulled in conflicting directions as the marketing, product development, and finance departments each get different feedback from different sets of people. And without a system which ensured collaborative exchanges within the company, it's also easy for small 'pockets of innovation' to disappear. Innovation is a contact sport. You can't brief people just by saying, "We're going in this direction and I'm going to take you with me."Cialdini believes that this 'follow-the-leader syndrome is dangerous, not least because it encouraged bosses to go it alone. 'It's been scientifically proven that three people will be better than one at solving problems, even if that one person is the smartest person in the field.'To prove his point, Cialdini cites an interview with molecular biologist James Watson. Watson, together with Francis Crick, discovered the structure of DNA, the genetic information carrier of all living organisms. 'When asked how they had cracked the code ahead of an array of highly accomplished rival investigators, he said something that stunned me. He said he and Crick had succeeded because they were aware that they weren't the most intelligent of the scientists pursuing the answer. The smartest scientist was called Rosalind Franklin who, Watson said, "was so intelligent she rarely sought advice"'Writing, visualizing and prototyping can stimulate the flow of new ideas. Cialdini cite scores of research papers and historical events that prove that even something as simple as writing deepens every individual's engagement in the project. It is, he says, the reason why all those competitions on breakfast cereal packets encouraged us to write in saying, in no more than 10 words: "I like Kellogg's Com Flakes because…" The very act of writing makes us more likely to believe it.Authority doesn't have to inhibit innovation but it often does. Many theorists believe the ideal boss should lead from behind, taking pride in collective accomplishment and giving credit where it is due. Cialdini says: "Leaders should encourage everyone to contribute and simultaneously assure all concerned that every recommendation is important to making the right decision and will be given full attention." The frustrating thing about innovation is that there are many approaches, but no magic formula. However, a manager who wants to create a truly innovative culture can make their job a lot easier by recognizing these psychological realities. The example of the 'million-dollar quartet' underlines the writer's point about.A.recognizing talent.B.working as a team.C.having a shared objective.D.being an effective leader.James Watson suggests that he and Franc is Crick won the race to discover the DNA code because they.A.were conscious of their own limitations.B.brought complementary skills to their partnership.C.were determined to outperform their brighter rivals.D.encouraged each other to realize their joint ambition. The writer mentions competitions on breakfast cereal packets as an example of how to.A.inspire creative thinking.B.generate concise writing.C.promote loyalty to a group.D.strengthen commitment to an idea.In the last paragraph, the writer suggests that it is important for employees to.A.be aware of their company's goals.B.feel that their contributions are valued.C.have respect for their co-workers' achievements.D.understand why certain management decisions are made..

  • The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.

  • question or statement.Hot pot is a traditional dish in China. It is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of the Jin Dynasty. Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty

  • The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. [共5题](1)What kind of manager is needed in present international business and foreign investment? [本题2分]A. The man who represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation. B. The man with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. C. The man who is wealthy and impersonal. D. The man who can negotiate with his foreign counterparts.
