You may still want a kind of exercise that’s inexpensive and easy to do. Why not try walking? Walking requires no special equipment(装备). It is a kind of exercise that almost any normal, healthy person can do. Walking is good for your health like jogging or running; it will just take longer. Jogging and running make your heart work harder than walking. They also put more stress on your legs and feet than walking does. The problem with walking is that most people don’t take it seriously. But there’s a big difference between serious walking and the walking that most of us do. Walking, like jogging, should have a steady and continuous motion(稳健而持续的动作). If you want to get your exercise by walking, you need to have your own walking plan. After all, runners and joggers set goals for themselves. Walkers need goals, too. You also need to set a course to walk. Start by walking about 15-30 minutes a day. Increase your time and distance(距离) slowly. And try increasing your walking speed little by little. If you prefer to jog or run, follow the same advice. Start off slowly. Spend most of the first few days just walking. Then, start walking and running on the same day. Run or jog a short distance, then walk for a while, then, run, then walk. Follow that pattern for 15-30 minutes a day. Slowly make each run longer and each walk shorter. Later on, you can increase your distance, speed and exercise time. 46.将画线短语 a “born” runner 译为汉语。 47.列举两条jogging和running对身体部位的影响。 (1) (2) 48.What’s the problem with walking? 49.选出作者对步行健身的两种建议。 A.Have a walking plan. Working at a desk all day may not be as bad for your health as sitting in front of a television after work. That is a finding of a new study done in the United States. It also suggests that not all forms of sitting are equally bad. Jeanette Garcia led the study. Garcia works as a researcher at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. "We've been hearing more and more about how sitting is the new smoking," she said. She added that other evidence suggests a relationship between health problems and time spent sitting. "However, it's been unclear whether all sitting is created equal, suggesting that as long as you reduce any type of sitting, then that's helpful in improving health," she added. "This study suggests that this may not be the case, and that we should focus more on leisure(休闲)time siting, mainly television viewing time, rather than sitting, in general.”The study followed close to 3,600 African-American adults. Almost one-third of them watched television, or TV, for more than four hours a day. A little more than one-third of the subjects spent between two and four hours a day sitting in front of the TV. The remaining third watched TV for less than two hours a day. Researchers followed the group for an average of 8.4 years. During the study, 205 of the subjects died and 129 others suffered a heart attack or stroke. Compared to people who watched less than two hours of television daily, those who spent more than four hours in front of the TV were 49 percent more likely to die or have a heart attack or stroke. But the undesirable health effects of TV appeared to be limited to adults who failed to get the recommended amount of weekly exercise. That is around 150 minutes of moderate(普通的)physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise every week. Lin Yang is a researcher at the University of Calgary in Canada. She says it is possible that sitting in front of the TV might be worse than sitting at a desk because people snack while they are watching TV. Yang explained that “the evidence on TV viewing and health risks is strong," even if the exact biological causes are unclear.【小题1】What does Garcia probably agree with?A.Less sitting, better health.B.All kinds of sitting create the equal effects.C.We should focus more on time sitting.D.Sitting is as harmful as the new smoking.【小题2】What can you know about the participants in the study?A.205 participants died of a heart attack or stroke.B.3,600American-Afican adults were followed closely.C.Participants were followed for an average of more than 8 years.D.Over 1200 participants watched TV for more than 4 hours a day.【小题3】Who were more likely affected by undesirable health effects of TV?A.Those who watched less than two hours of television daily.B.Those who spent more than four hours in front of the TV.C.Those who spend 150 minutes on moderate physical activity.D.Those who didn't get the recommended amount of weekly exercise.【小题4】Which is the best title of the passage?A.Why sitting is the new smoking?B.All kinds of sitting are equally bad?C.More exercise produces good health?D.Why TV viewing time is bad for health?

If you start each day desperately wishing for an extra hour in bed, the following is likely to leave you feeling even more bad-tempered. Scientists have identified a "sleepless elite" — small group of people for whom a lie-in is a waste of time. Rather than being tired, bad-tempered under-achievers, they are an energetic, outgoing and optimistic group who can happily and healthily get by on just four or five shut-eye a night. If that were not irritating enough, they tend to be slim, able to hold down two jobs at the same time, and breeze through their extra-long days without needing caffeine pick-me-ups(咖啡因提神物)or cat naps. Working out how the gene cuts sleep without any obvious impact on health could help in the design of drugs us all a few extra hours in our day. The bad news is that while many of us get by on a few hours sleep a night, just one to three people in 100 qualify to be part of the sleepless elite. The research team is now appealing for members of the lucky group to come forward to allow their DNA to be studied. University of California researcher Ying-Hui Fu said: " My long term goal is to someday learn enough so we can manipulate the sleep pathways without damaging our health. Everybody can use more waking hours, even if you just watch movies. " Many of those who have already volunteered share fascinating characteristics. They are thinner than average, relentlessly upbeat(兴奋)and seem to have a high tolerance for physical pain and psychological set-backs. Researcher Dr. Christopher Jones told the Wall Street Journal: " Typically, at the end of a long-structured phone interview, they will admit they have been texting and surfing the Internet and doing cross-word puzzles at the same time, all on less than six hours of sleep. "Which of the following could be the title of this passage?A.The Sleepless Elite.B.The Impact of Sleep on Health.C.A New Research on Sleep.D.Manipulation of Sleep Pathways.

A work of art created by artificial intelligence (AI) has been sold by a major art seller for the first time. The print sold for an unexpectedly large amount of 432, 500. The artwork was bought during an auction (拍卖) Thursday at Christie's, an art house, in New York City. Officials had predicted it would sell for between 7, 000 and 10, 000.In a website post, Christie's said the AI-created work was the first ever sold by a major auction house. It praised the sale as a signal of "the arrival of AI art on the world auction stage."The artwork, called "Portrait (肖像) of Edmond Belamy," was made by a machine learning algorithm (算法). The AI system was created by members of an art group called Obvious in Paris, France. It shows the portrait of a man, looking similar to subjects shown in historical paintings. Christie's described some differences of the AI-created work compared to other art it sells. For example, it said some parts of the face were not as clearly drawn as those painted by artists. Also some parts of the print were left empty. However, Christie's sale organizer Richard Lloyd said the piece was very similar to many others sold over many years.Three creators from the art group Obvious cooperated on the process that made the print. First they put a collection of 15,000 portraits into a machine learning system. The portraits were painted by artists from the time period between the 14th and 20th centuries. Then a tool called the "Generator" made a new image based on the information entered into the system. After that, another tool, called a "Discriminator", attempted to find differences between the human-made image and the one created by the Generator. Then the image was improved. "The aim is to fool the Discriminator into thinking that the new images are real-life portraits. Then we have a result." Obvious group member Hugo Caselles-dupre said in a statement. It can be inferred from the text that .A. the AI portrait received much recognitionB. there is little true artistic value in AI artworkC. technology will one day replace human artistsD. there is no similar AI system for art at present
When he was a young boy, his grandmother wished him to become a priest. How little did she know. His dreams were made of gold and in his mind he held the vision to conquer the world. This is the legend of Aristotle Onassis. In 1922, Onassis immigrated to Athens and shortly afterwards, with just 250 in his pocket, he would sail to Argentina. The journey of an epic entrepreneur had just begun. Ten years later, he would become the owner of his first tanker and lay the grounds for his massive empire.“The rule is that there are no rules.” This was the core of the Onassis business philosophy. He rose to become a shipping tycoon and amassed the world’s largest privately owned fleet. Negotiating mega-deals with oil companies and gradually becoming a leading figure in Monaco’s financial powerhouse, he owned a significant part of the country’s assets. In 1957, his business endeavors would expand to acquire his own airline, Olympic Airways.Onassis was a strategist at heart, and even little details were part of a unique approach to life and doing business in his own style. One such ritual that he followed was to always eat just before attending an important dinner. His point was that all senses and attention should be focused on the discussions exchanged, gathering precious information and building closer relations while others are distracted by their mere interest to consume food. While negotiating his big deals, he would invent his own secret terms that only his closest associates understood, and nobody doing business with him would dare to ask what he meant.Part of the Onassis legend was Scorpios, his personal paradise island – that he brought into life by planting thousands of trees and flowers – a place where leaders and the high society of that era would gather from all over the world to indulge into mythic parties.1. What can we learn about Onassis as a child?A) He once thought of becoming a priest.B) He was very close to his grandmother.C) He dreamed of getting gold and money.D) He had a very grand vision for his future. 2. What made Onassis an epic entrepreneur according to the passage?A) His immigration to a foreign country.B) His success within ten years. C) His great success at a young age.D) His ownership of his first tanker.3. Which of the following is NOT Onassis’ achievement?A) He collected the world’s largest privately owned fleet.B) He owned a significant part of the Monaco’s assets.C) He purchased top oil companies around the world. D) He acquired his own airline, Olympic Airways.4. Which of the following is considered Onassis’ style of doing business?A) Eating before attending important dinners. B) Focusing on little details when negotiating.C) Distracting others’ interest during discussions.D) Consulting only his closet associates and friends.5. What can we learn about Scorpios from the passage?A) It is the place where Onassis’ legend began.B) It is an artificial island owned by Onassis.C) It is an island where Onassis held parties. question or statement.Hot pot is a traditional dish in China. It is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of the Jin Dynasty. Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty

The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.

The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. [共5题](1)What kind of manager is needed in present international business and foreign investment? [本题2分]A. The man who represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation. B. The man with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. C. The man who is wealthy and impersonal. D. The man who can negotiate with his foreign counterparts.
